Endurance Training Q & A

Liberty Rehabilitation & Wellness

What is endurance training?

Endurance training is a form of exercise that increases strength and cardiovascular endurance during rehabilitation after an injury or surgery. While strength training often involves lifting heavier weights, endurance training uses lots of repetitions with light resistance and fewer breaks between sets.

Cardiovascular exercise is a form of endurance training that Dr. Lee may recommend as part of your rehabilitation program. He may have you complete aerobic exercises in water, walk on a treadmill, or use a stationary bike to increase your strength and endurance.

What are the benefits of endurance training?

The benefits of endurance training are endless and include:

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Improved control of an injured joint
  • Increased flexibility and range of motion
  • Better muscle and joint strength
  • Improved overall fitness and well-being
  • Increased mobility
  • Future injury prevention

In addition to your in-office sessions, Dr. Lee provides you with exercises and stretches you’ll practice at home to enhance your healing and reduce pain after an injury or surgery.

What should I expect during my endurance training sessions?

The specific rehabilitation you’ll complete with Dr. Lee depends on the type of pain or injury you’re experiencing, but you can expect a few general elements during your physical therapy sessions.

Strengthening and endurance exercises

Dr. Lee works with you to strengthen the muscles and joints surrounding your injury, so you can get back on your feet and resume your day-to-day activities as quickly as possible. He may use a therapy band for added resistance during endurance training, or he may have you complete aerobic exercises.

Stretching exercises

Stretching increases your range of motion after an injury, aids in healing, and can reduce pain. Dr. Lee helps you complete various stretches at his physical therapy office and educates you on stretches to perform at home.

Manual manipulation

Dr. Lee may use myofascial release or other manual manipulation techniques to break up tight muscles or scar tissue. This technique helps ease muscle pain and helps you relax.

Muscle and joint support

In some cases, Dr. Lee may also recommend a brace, splint, or Kinesio tape® to enhance your recovery, give you added support and prevent future injuries.
