Liberty Rehabilitation & Wellness

What is myalgia?

Myalgia is muscle pain, and it’s common among adults and even children. You’ll likely experience myalgia at some point in your life. Muscle pain may involve one or more groups of muscles and can also occur near connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments. The pain may center around one or two specific areas.

What causes myalgia?

Anyone can experience myalgia at any time. Common causes of muscle pain include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Overuse injuries
  • Vigorous exercise
  • A new workout program
  • Fibromyalgia, a condition that causes chronic pain
  • Influenza
  • Stress
  • Poor posture

You’ll usually know the cause of your muscle pain, especially if it’s related to an overuse injury or vigorous exercise. Pain might begin the same day or the day after you try new exercises, as it commonly occurs in muscles you’re not used to using as much.

How does physical therapy ease myalgia?

At Liberty Rehabilitation & Wellness, Dr. Lee uses a variety of physical therapy techniques to ease muscle soreness.

Manual muscle manipulation

Dr. Lee uses manual muscle manipulation to ease soreness and pain in muscles and joints. He might use myofascial release or other forms of massage to apply pressure to trigger points or knotted areas.

Cupping

Cupping is another technique Dr. Lee uses to ease myalgia pain. During cupping, Dr. Lee applies special suction cups to your skin to massage tissue, reduce pain, and improve blood flow to the affected area.

Stretching and strengthening exercises

Stretching and strengthening exercises help relieve muscle pain and prevent pain from returning. Dr. Lee lets you know which stretching exercises are most beneficial based on the area of your body where you’re experiencing muscle pain. He works with you to improve your posture, which can relieve neck, shoulder, and back muscle pain.

Other muscle pain treatments

To relieve muscle or joint pain, Dr. Lee may recommend the following natural remedies to enhance healing:

  • Sombra natural healing gel for pain relief
  • Tiger pain relief patches
  • Natural remedies, such as herbs and teas
  • Icing or heating the affected area
